IELTS Speaking Part 1: Reading & Books (Band 9 Sample Answers)

This IELTS Speaking Part 1 topic asks about reading and books — a familiar area you can speak about naturally. A band-9 answer gives a clear reply and extends it with a preference, a reason or a small detail, then stops cleanly. Below are five common questions with band-9 model answers in a relaxed spoken register, plus why they score 9 and the collocations worth stealing.

01 · Questions & Band 9 answers

Q: Do you enjoy reading?

I do, very much — it's probably my favourite way to switch off at the end of the day. I mostly read fiction, because I love getting lost in a good story, though I'll happily dip into non-fiction if the subject grabs me. There's something about a book that a screen just can't replicate.

answer, then add why

Q: What kind of books do you like to read?

I have pretty eclectic taste, but I keep coming back to literary novels and the occasional biography. I'm drawn to anything with well-drawn characters that makes me see the world a little differently. I tend to steer clear of very plot-heavy thrillers — they're fun, but they don't stay with me the way a thoughtful novel does.

state a preference, then a contrast

Q: Did you read a lot as a child?

I was a complete bookworm, actually. My parents used to take me to the local library every weekend, and I'd come home with a huge stack of books and get through them in days. I think that early habit is a big part of why I still read so much now.

past habit + link to now

Q: Do you prefer paper books or e-books?

Honestly, a paper book every time. I know e-books are more convenient, especially for travelling, but I love the physical feel of a real book — turning the pages, seeing it on my shelf afterwards. Staring at yet another screen after a whole day of work just doesn't appeal to me.

take a side, concede the other

Q: Would you like to write a book one day?

It's a lovely idea, and part of me would absolutely love to. I'm not sure I have the discipline to actually finish one, though — writing a whole book seems like an enormous undertaking. Maybe when I have a bit more time on my hands, I'll give it a proper go.

express a wish, add a realistic caveat

02 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

Each answer commits to a clear line and develops it with a reason or a small story, then stops. Relaxed signposts ("honestly", "actually", "though") link the ideas naturally, so the delivery never stalls or rambles.

Lexical Resource

Reading vocabulary is idiomatic and precise — "switch off", "get lost in a good story", "eclectic taste", "a complete bookworm", "steer clear of" — used casually the way a confident speaker actually talks.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Structures vary well: a past habit with "used to"/"would" ("My parents used to take me... I'd come home with a huge stack"), a relative clause ("anything with well-drawn characters that makes me see the world differently"), and a concessive ("I know e-books are more convenient... but"). All accurate.

Pronunciation

Short, speakable chunks with natural stress on the key words invite the easy, chatty intonation Part 1 rewards, with no tongue-twisting clusters to disrupt the flow.

04 · Frequently asked questions

What if I don't read much?

That's fine — just say so and extend it. "I don't read as much as I'd like because I'm always busy, but I enjoy a good book on holiday" is a solid band-9 answer, because it adds a reason. Honesty flows better than pretending.

Can I talk about e-books or audiobooks?

Yes — reading on a device or listening to audiobooks all count. You can even use it to extend an answer ("I mostly listen to audiobooks on my commute"). Just answer the specific question you are asked.

How do I extend a short answer about reading?

Add what, why or a memory. "I like reading" becomes band-9 as "I love reading fiction because it lets me switch off and get lost in a story." The extension is what earns the marks.

Do I need to name famous books or authors?

Not necessarily, but naming a genre or an author you genuinely like gives you specific detail that flows more naturally than a vague answer. Just be ready to say why you like them.
