IELTS Writing Task 2: Technology & Social Isolation (Band 9 Sample)

This "to what extent do you agree or disagree" question asks whether technology, despite connecting us, is actually making people more isolated. A band-9 response gives a clear degree of agreement and defends it while weighing the opposite view. Below is a model answer of roughly 285 words that partly agrees, followed by a breakdown of why it scores 9 on all four criteria.

01 · The task

Although modern communication technology is supposed to bring people closer together, some believe it is actually making people more socially isolated. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

02 · Band 9 sample answer

285 words · Band 9

It is often argued that the very technology designed to connect us is quietly driving us apart. While I recognise the genuine benefits of digital communication, I partly agree that, used unwisely, it can leave people more isolated rather than less.

1. Why technology can isolate us

There is real weight to this concern. Many people now spend hours interacting through a screen while barely speaking to the person next to them, and online exchanges, however frequent, often lack the depth and warmth of face-to-face contact. Social media can make matters worse, since endlessly scrolling through other people's carefully edited lives can leave users feeling inadequate and alone. In this sense, we risk mistaking constant connectivity for genuine closeness.

2. Why technology can also connect us

However, it would be unfair to place all the blame on the technology itself. For people separated by distance — families living abroad, or those in remote areas — video calls and messaging are a lifeline that would once have been impossible. Online communities can also bring together people who share rare interests or who struggle to socialise in person. Ultimately, whether technology isolates or connects depends far more on how it is used than on the tools themselves.

In conclusion, while modern communication can certainly foster isolation when it replaces real relationships, I only partly agree with the claim, because for many people, used thoughtfully, the same technology is a powerful way of staying connected.

03 · Why this scores Band 9

Task Response

The answer gives a precise degree of agreement — "I partly agree" — and defends both sides: how technology can isolate (shallow online contact, social-media comparison) and how it can connect (a lifeline across distance, shared communities). The nuanced position is stated in the introduction and resolved in the conclusion.

Coherence & Cohesion

The essay balances "why it can isolate" against "why it can connect", one idea per paragraph, with the stance signalled early. Cohesion is natural — "There is real weight to this concern...", "However, it would be unfair to...", "Ultimately...", "In conclusion".

Lexical Resource

Vocabulary is precise and idiomatic — "driving us apart", "constant connectivity", "carefully edited lives", "a lifeline", "used thoughtfully" — with confident collocation carrying an abstract argument rather than filler.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

A wide range is controlled accurately: a concessive ("While I recognise the genuine benefits"), a "would once have been" structure ("a lifeline that would once have been impossible"), and a comparative judgement ("depends far more on how it is used than on the tools themselves"). The writing stays error-free.

05 · Frequently asked questions

Can I "partly agree" in a to-what-extent essay?

Yes, and it often produces a strong answer. This model accepts that technology can isolate people when it replaces real contact, but argues it also connects them when used well. The key is to make the degree of agreement explicit.

How do I develop the "it connects us" side?

Use concrete cases — families separated by distance, remote communities, people with rare interests — for whom digital contact is genuinely valuable. Specific examples are rewarded under Task Response and make the argument convincing.

How do I avoid sitting on the fence?

Give a clear overall judgement even while discussing both sides. This answer concludes that the outcome "depends on how it is used" and commits to "only partly agree" — a definite position rather than an undecided one.

How long should the essay be?

At least 250 words; a band-9 answer is usually 260–290. This model is 285 words, enough to argue both sides and reach a clear, qualified judgement without padding.
