02 · Band 9 sample answer
The goal I'd like to talk about is growing the language-learning app I've built into something used by learners right across the region, not just here in Vietnam. It's a big, slightly daunting ambition, but it's the one that gets me out of bed in the morning.
I set this goal a few years ago, around the time I decided to leave a stable job and go all in on the idea. Since then, pretty much everything I do has been geared towards it. I'm constantly talking to users to understand what they actually need, improving the product, and slowly learning the business side of things — marketing, hiring, all the parts I'm less naturally good at. It's very much a case of taking it one step at a time.
The reason it matters so much to me is deeply personal. I struggled to learn English myself, and I know how much having the right tools would have changed things for me. So this isn't really about building a big company for its own sake — it's about helping people like my younger self open doors they wouldn't otherwise have had. That sense of purpose is what keeps me going through the inevitable hard days.
03 · Why this scores Band 9
The answer covers each cue-card point — what, when, how, and why — with natural linking ("I set this goal a few years ago...", "The reason it matters so much to me..."). It builds to a clear, personal conclusion and sustains a full two-minute turn without stalling.
Precise, idiomatic vocabulary — "go all in", "geared towards it", "one step at a time", "for its own sake", "open doors", "a sense of purpose" — carries the answer, and the ambition is expressed with genuine feeling rather than flat phrasing.
A wide range is controlled accurately: a relative clause ("the app I've built"), a present perfect for ongoing effort ("everything I do has been geared towards it"), and a mixed conditional ("how much the right tools would have changed things for me"). No error interrupts the flow.
The script is built from speakable, stress-timed phrases with natural chunking, and the passionate content invites genuine intonation, so the recording lands clear sentence stress without tongue-twisting clusters.

05 · Frequently asked questions
Does the goal have to be a big life ambition?
It should matter to you, but it does not have to be huge. A concrete personal goal — learning a skill, running a marathon, saving for something — works well, as long as you can explain what you are doing and why it matters.
How do I fill two minutes on a goal?
Cover what the goal is and when you set it, then spend real time on what you are actively doing and why it matters. The "how" and "why" parts naturally fill the time and let you develop a personal reason at length.
What tense should I use?
Present tenses for the current goal and effort ("I'm constantly talking to users"), past for when you set it ("I decided to leave a stable job"), and future or conditional for the hope. Accurate mixing lifts the grammar score.
How do I make the "why it matters" part strong?
Give a specific, personal reason rather than "it would be nice". This answer ties the goal to a genuine struggle and a wish to help others, which is a far more compelling, band-9 "why" than a vague ambition.
