IELTS Speaking Part 2: Describe a Time You Helped Someone (Band 9 Sample)

This Part 2 cue card asks you to describe a time you helped someone and to explain how you felt about it. A band-9 answer tells it as a short story — the situation, what you did, the outcome — and lands one clear, developed reflection. Below is a model long-turn of about 235 words in a natural spoken register, followed by a breakdown of why it earns a 9 on all four speaking criteria and the collocations worth stealing.

02 · Band 9 sample answer

The time I'd like to talk about is when I helped a young man who was just starting out at the company where I used to work. He was a fresh graduate, clearly bright but completely overwhelmed, and I could see a lot of my younger self in him.

The situation was that he'd been thrown in at the deep end on a difficult project with almost no guidance, and he was quietly drowning. He was too nervous to ask for help, so one day I just pulled up a chair, told him it was completely normal to feel lost, and offered to talk it through. Over the following weeks I ended up mentoring him informally — explaining things nobody had bothered to, introducing him to the right people, and reassuring him when he made the usual beginner's mistakes.

As for how I felt, it was genuinely one of the most rewarding things I did that year. Watching him gradually find his feet and grow into a really confident, capable colleague was hugely satisfying — far more than hitting any of my own targets. It reminded me that a bit of patience and encouragement at the right moment can make an enormous difference to someone, which is a lesson I've tried to carry with me ever since.

03 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

The answer tells the story in order — who, the situation, what was done, and how it felt — with natural linking ("The situation was that...", "Over the following weeks...", "As for how I felt..."). It builds to a clear reflection and sustains a full two-minute turn without stalling.

Lexical Resource

Precise, idiomatic vocabulary — "starting out", "thrown in at the deep end", "quietly drowning", "find his feet", "carry with me" — carries the story, and the reflection is expressed with genuine feeling rather than flat phrasing.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

A wide range is controlled accurately: past perfect for background ("he'd been thrown in at the deep end"), a gerund subject ("Watching him gradually find his feet... was hugely satisfying"), and a relative clause carrying the lesson ("which is a lesson I've tried to carry with me"). Narrative tenses stay consistent.

Pronunciation

The script is built from speakable, stress-timed phrases with natural chunking, and the warm content invites genuine intonation, so the recording lands clear sentence stress without tongue-twisting clusters.

04 · Useful phrases for this topic

Tap a phrase to see what it means and how to use it. Natural phrases like these lift your Lexical Resource score.

05 · Frequently asked questions

Does the help have to be something dramatic?

Not at all — everyday help often makes the best answer. Mentoring a colleague, helping a stranger, or supporting a friend all work, as long as you can describe the situation and reflect on how it felt.

How do I fill two minutes on this topic?

Tell it as a story: set up the situation, describe what you actually did with one or two specifics, and finish with how it made you feel. The situation and the reflection naturally fill the time.

What tense should I use?

Mostly past simple and past perfect for the story ("he'd been thrown in at the deep end", "I pulled up a chair"), with present perfect for the lasting lesson ("a lesson I've tried to carry with me"). Accurate mixing lifts the grammar score.

How important is the "how you felt" part?

It's the point of the task. The examiner wants a developed personal reaction. This answer reflects on how rewarding it was and the lesson it taught, rather than just saying "it felt good".
