IELTS Speaking Part 2: Describe a Tourist Attraction (Band 9 Sample)

This Part 2 cue card asks you to describe a tourist attraction in your country and to explain why it is worth visiting. A band-9 answer paints the place vividly, says where it is and what you do there, and lands one clear reason it appeals to visitors. Below is a model long-turn of about 230 words in a natural spoken register, followed by a breakdown of why it earns a 9 on all four speaking criteria and the collocations worth stealing.

01 · The cue card

  • what the attraction is
  • where it is located
  • what visitors can do there
  • and explain why it is worth visiting

02 · Band 9 sample answer

The tourist attraction I'd like to talk about is Ha Long Bay, a spectacular seascape in the north-east of my country that draws visitors from all over the world.

It's an enormous bay dotted with thousands of towering limestone islands that rise dramatically straight out of the emerald water, many of them hollowed out with caves you can explore. The usual way to see it is on an overnight cruise: you glide between the islands on a traditional wooden boat, kayak into hidden lagoons, swim in the calm sea, and wake up to the mist lifting off the water, which is absolutely magical. There are also floating fishing villages where you can get a glimpse of a completely different way of life.

The main reason it's so worth visiting is the sheer, jaw-dropping scenery — photographs really don't do it justice. There's something genuinely humbling about drifting past these ancient rock formations in near silence, and it feels a world away from the noise of the city. It's the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave, and whenever friends come to visit from abroad, it's always the first place I insist on taking them.

03 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

The answer moves smoothly through the cue card — what, where, what you do, and why — with natural linking ("The usual way to see it is...", "The main reason it's so worth visiting...") and builds to a warm closing point, sustaining a full two-minute turn without stalling.

Lexical Resource

Descriptive vocabulary is vivid and idiomatic — "a spectacular seascape", "towering limestone islands", "hidden lagoons", "jaw-dropping scenery", "don't do it justice", "a world away" — painting the place far beyond a flat "it is beautiful".

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

A wide range is controlled accurately: reduced relative clauses ("islands that rise dramatically", "many of them hollowed out with caves"), a list of parallel present-tense verbs ("you glide... kayak... swim... and wake up"), and a "whenever" clause ("whenever friends come to visit, it's the first place I insist on taking them"). All accurate.

Pronunciation

The script is built from speakable, stress-timed phrases with natural chunking, and the enthusiastic content invites expressive intonation, so the recording lands clear sentence stress without tongue-twisting clusters.

Tap a phrase to see what it means and how to use it. Natural phrases like these lift your Lexical Resource score.

05 · Frequently asked questions

Does it have to be a famous attraction?

No — a local park, market, temple or beach all work. The examiner is judging your description and reasons, not the fame of the place. Choose whatever gives you the most vivid detail to talk about.

How do I fill two minutes describing a place?

Describe what it looks like, say where it is and what visitors can do there, then spend most of your time on why it is worth visiting. Sensory detail and a genuine personal reason fill the time naturally.

What tense should I use?

Mostly the present to describe the place and activities ("you glide between the islands", "it draws visitors"), which suits a general description. Add "whenever" or past examples for variety, as this model does.

Do I need tourism vocabulary?

Some helps — "attraction", "scenery", "cruise", "draws visitors" — but vivid everyday description matters more. Painting the scene clearly scores better than a list of travel-brochure terms.
