IELTS Speaking Part 2: Describe a Happy Childhood Memory (Band 9 Sample)

This Part 2 cue card asks you to describe a happy memory from your childhood and to explain why it stays with you. A band-9 answer tells the story vividly, makes clear when it happened and who was there, and lands one genuine reason it remains so precious. Below is a model long-turn of about 230 words in a natural spoken register, followed by a breakdown of why it earns a 9 on all four speaking criteria and the collocations worth stealing.

02 · Band 9 sample answer

The memory I'd like to share is of the long summer holidays I spent at my grandparents' house in the countryside, and one afternoon in particular has always stuck with me.

I must have been about eight at the time, so this would have been the summer before I started at a new school. My grandfather had promised to teach me to fish, and that afternoon the two of us walked down to a little river at the bottom of their land, carrying a couple of old rods and a picnic my grandmother had packed. We sat on the bank for hours, mostly in comfortable silence, and I still remember the thrill of feeling my very first tug on the line.

The reason it's such a happy memory isn't really the fishing — I don't think we actually caught anything worth keeping. It's that I had my grandfather's complete, unhurried attention, which felt enormously special as a small child. Looking back as an adult, I realise how rare and precious that kind of slow, undistracted time together is, and sadly he passed away a few years ago. So whenever that afternoon comes to mind, it fills me with a lovely, bittersweet warmth, and I feel incredibly lucky to have had it.

03 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

The answer narrates the memory in a clear order — setting the scene, telling the story, then reflecting on why it matters — with natural linking ("I must have been about eight...", "The reason it's such a happy memory...", "So whenever that afternoon comes to mind...") and sustains a full two-minute turn without stalling.

Lexical Resource

Vocabulary is precise and evocative — "stuck with me", "comfortable silence", "a tug on the line", "unhurried attention", "undistracted time", "bittersweet warmth" — conveying real feeling rather than the flat "it was a nice day" of a weaker answer.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

A wide range is controlled accurately: speculative modals for the past ("I must have been about eight", "this would have been the summer before..."), past perfect for background ("My grandfather had promised to teach me"), and a present reflection ("I realise how rare and precious that kind of time is"). All accurate.

Pronunciation

The script is built from speakable, stress-timed phrases with natural chunking, and the tender, nostalgic content invites genuine intonation, so the recording lands clear sentence stress without tongue-twisting clusters.

05 · Frequently asked questions

Does the memory have to be dramatic or unusual?

Not at all — a simple, ordinary moment often works best, because you can describe it in rich detail and give a heartfelt reason. This answer is just an afternoon by a river, yet the feeling behind it makes it band 9.

How do I fill two minutes with one memory?

Set the scene, tell the little story in order, then spend the most time on why it makes you happy. Sensory details — what you saw, did and felt — plus your reflection on its meaning fill the time naturally.

What tense should I use?

Mainly the past for the story ("we walked down to the river", "my grandfather had promised"), with a shift to the present for your reflection now ("whenever it comes to mind, it fills me with warmth"). Accurate mixing lifts the grammar score.

Is it okay if the memory has a sad element?

Yes — a touch of bittersweet feeling, like remembering a relative who has passed away, can make the answer more moving and give you more to say, as long as the overall memory is a happy one.
